Predicting Carroll vs. Trinity, Northwest vs. Nelson and more

Trusting the instincts led to both feast and famine for your humble scribe’s view of the Week 7 picks.

We went against the book, predicting Keller Fossil Ridge winning at Denton Guyer – and ran into bigtime famine. In fact, that wasn’t even close. Guyer blew out the Panthers, 43-3. We also took a chance with Grapevine beating Fort Worth Dunbar. For a while that looked pretty bold, as Grapevine led early. However, the Mustangs couldn’t sustain it and lost, 60-40. That game was spread out between Friday and Saturday because of the weather.

However, we stuck with Keller Central and finally had our feast. But it was hard not admit when looking at the early scores, the first thought was, “We’re going to get burned again.” Keller also seems to be in a pretty good position as the Indians were impressive against Byron Nelson.

Let’s get to the Week 8 selections. Hard to believe we have only four weeks remaining in the regular season. It always moves too fast. Grapevine is on its bye.

Last Week: 5-2

Season: 32-16

Denton Ryan (4-2, 2-1) at Keller Fossil Ridge (5-1, 2-1); 7 p.m. Thursday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: The Raiders are one of those teams who are starting to make you wonder if they are as good as advertised. They’ve won, but they are not an overwhelming team. Maybe the best thing for the Panthers is that they can put the blowout loss to Denton Guyer behind them quickly and move on. And a short week could be the best medicine. This is still a very good team, but it must respond the right way.

Prediction: Keller Fossil Ridge 36, Denton Ryan 22

Keller Timber Creek (3-3, 0-3) vs. Keller (3-3, 2-1); 7 p.m. Friday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: You have to feel for Timber Creek coach Kevin Golden. The good vibes from the non-district season are gone, and the Falcons are on the verge of being eliminated. On the other hand, Carl Stralow’s Indians are putting some things together. They’re not pretty, but they win.

Prediction: Keller 25, Keller Timber Creek 18

Keller Central (4-2, 2-1) at Denton Guyer (5-1, 3-0); 7 p.m. Friday, C.H. Collins Complex, Denton: The Chargers helped themselves with a big win over Justin Northwest last week. That helps set them up for the playoff push. This week’s journey to Denton County will be more than a problem. The Wildcats were very impressive and sent the message last week they are the district’s best team.

Prediction: Denton Guyer 40, Keller Central 20

Justin Northwest (2-4, 0-3) vs. Byron Nelson (2-4, 1-2); 7 p.m. Friday, Northwest ISD Stadium, Justin: A rivalry is born. This is the first football meeting between the Northwest ISD’s two schools. They never played when each was in different classifications. And it turns into one for survival as far as the playoffs are concerned. Northwest blew an early lead and lost to Central and must be sick about it. Nelson didn’t have enough at the end against Keller.

Prediction: Justin Northwest 31, Byron Nelson 28

Colleyville Heritage (3-3, 1-1) at Hurst L.D. Bell (0-7, 0-3); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Pennington Field, Bedford: The Panthers still have to some matters to resolve offensively. But defensively, they’re playing at a high level. That’s good, because they have Carroll and Coppell in the next two weeks. With DT Jason Williams returning, that only strengthens the unit. For the Blue Raiders, this season has been a nightmare. They have scored only 14 points in their first three district games.

Prediction: Colleyville Heritage 30, Hurst L.D. Bell 7

Euless Trinity (7-0, 3-0) at Carroll (6-0, 2-0); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dragon Stadium, Southlake: The game of the year in our coverage area, by far. You have two of the top teams in Texas located within 10 miles of each other. They have proud histories. The key here is whether Carroll’s rushing defense – it has been shaky at times – can do enough to limit the Trojans’ success. Trinity has allowed only three points through its first three games. I’m just not sure if Carroll can make enough stops.

Prediction: Euless Trinity 35, Carroll 30
