Find out what’s on your credit report before applying for a loan. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. If you find errors, fix the problem before contacting a mortgage lender. If you come across legitimate blemishes, you may want to take steps to improve your credit rating before applying for a home loan.
